About the Xth International Rangeland Congress The Organizing Committee for the 10th International Rangeland Congress is looking forward to hosting delegates from around the globe this July in Saskatoon! We have put together an ambitious program to meet the aim of the IRC to promote the interchange of scientific and technical information on all aspects of rangelands. The theme of this year's Congress is "The Future Management of Grazing and Wild Lands in a High-Tech World". Over 500 papers from authors representing nearly 60 countries have been submitted for consideration as an oral or poster presentation in one of 31 sub-theme areas. Pre-Congress Tours - 3, 4 or 7 Days Prior to the start of the Congress there are three Pre-Congress Tours ranging in length from three to seven days. These tours are a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the sights and learn about rangeland in western Canada. Read more >> Pre-Congress Workshops - July 16 & 17 Also, the weekend before Congress starts there are several complimentary Pre-Congress Workshops organized and hosted by Congress Sponsors. Most of the workshops run one day (Sunday, July 17), however, the INRA workshop will be 1.5 day (July 16 & 17). To sign up for a workshop, you simply pick the workshop when registering online for the Congress. Online registration is now closed. The early bird deadline was May 30th. There are a number of options ranging from hotels across the street from TCU Place to a few blocks away to residence rooms at the University of Saskatchewan. Read more>> About Saskatoon, Saskatchewan The Congress will take place in , which is centrally located in the Canadian portion of the Northern Great Plains grasslands of North America. Saskatoon’s (yxe.ca) has daily connections to Canadian airline hubs in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, and to Minneapolis, in the USA. Saskatchewan, in the heart of the Canadian prairies is a great place for an international congress as well as an extended holiday with your family. You could stay on a holiday ranch, go fishing in northern Saskatchewan, watch prairie sunsets or spend time in Canada’s Rocky mountains only a 7-hour drive from Saskatoon before or after the congress. The University of Saskatchewan () and the Recreation Department of the City of Saskatoon () offer various summer activities for children during the time of the congress. The Saskatchewan Tourism website has all sorts of information for an extended stay. Rangeland in Canada Rangelands are important in Canada, and in particular to the agricultural economy of Saskatchewan, which has almost 5 million ha of native grass rangelands, about 2 million ha of introduced hay, and 1.6 million ha of perennial pasture crops out of a total of nearly 26 million ha of agricultural land. The livestock industries, which include beef, dairy, sheep, buffalo, and exotic or game livestock, depend on rangelands and perennial grasslands for the base of their feed resources. Read more >>
